Holiday Planning with Pre-Teens
I suppose it came natural, back in the early 80’s for me to take my children to the commissary (military grocery store) and plan menus and talk about budgeting monthly food bills. After all, I didn’t have any babysitters nor could afford one and frankly I wanted to teach them ultimately how to cook so why not show them as we planned together. It sharpened their math skills, and gave them a sense of ownership in the meal.
As soon as my sons could see into a pot even on tip toes, I was there guiding them with the utensils. The idea of handing them a knife and an open flame got their attention and mine. Cooking with the boys was a perfect balance, and I would soon see them both turn into lifetime cooks not only for themselves, but their families. They are constantly introducing me into new spices and sharing recipes with me which are always delicious.
Now it’s time for them to pass on the torch and teach the next generation, but occasionally my grandchildren all gather here, and we have a cooking school and one day last summer a team competition which everyone agreed was so much fun.
Charcuterie trays are popular now and what a wonderful way to find their creativity and make a simple tray for the Super Bowl. Snow days always pop up in the North East, and eventually summer vacation giving ample time to try some new dishes. It’s a great time to plan a simple meal or make a dessert like pudding for Valentine’s Day together. St. Patrick’s Day might be a time to get those green vegetables in with their favorite foods. Simple fare and simply fun makes wonderful memories that will last throughout their childhood.
I hope you’ll leave me a message about trying this with your young chefs.
